TL;DR
Google can credit a YouTube or Demand Gen sale three ways, and it records each sale once, under the highest-ranking one: a click, then an engaged view, then a plain impression [1]. A store running WeltPixel Conversion Tracking sends Google Ads an upload for each order that carries a click ID and loads no Google Ads tag, so the click is covered from day one. The engaged view can come through the same upload, because Google says uploads with hashed customer data enable engaged-view conversions [4], but the buyer who watched and didn't click leaves no click ID, and the app only uploads those orders with two settings switched on. The impression is the one an upload can't carry: Google describes view-through as a conversion "on your site" [3] and documents Demand Gen's view-through bidding only for conversions its website tags track [1].
Key Takeaways
- Google records a conversion "only once to the highest ranking ad event type": click first, then engaged view, then impression [1].
- An engaged view on YouTube means at least 10 seconds of a skippable in-stream ad, or 5 seconds in-feed or on Shorts [2].
- For engaged-view credit on uploaded purchases, turn on "Enable Enhanced Conversions" and the import-without-GCLID setting in the app's Google Ads settings (Plus). Both are off by default.
- Google won't record an engaged view if the upload arrives more than 14 days after the conversion time [2]; a store sending "When the order is paid" can miss that on slow payments.
- New Demand Gen campaigns have view-through optimization on by default, but Google says it "does not currently support offline conversions, store visits, or OCI" [1].
- Read the split under Segments > Conversions > Ad event type in Google Ads; Shopify never sees it.
What does Google count when a YouTube viewer buys later?
Take one buyer, illustrative: she watches 14 seconds of your skippable in-stream ad on a Sunday evening, doesn't click, and on Monday types your store's address into her browser and buys. Google has three ways to credit a sale like hers, and it ranks them. "A conversion will be recorded only once to the highest ranking ad event type, click first followed by engaged-view finally an impression" [1].
| Ad event type | What the viewer did | What a server-side upload needs to earn it |
|---|---|---|
| Click | Clicked the ad, then bought | A Google click ID on the order, which the app uploads by default |
| Engaged view | Watched at least 10 seconds of a skippable in-stream ad, or 5 seconds in-feed or on Shorts [2] | Hashed customer data Google can match, uploaded within 14 days [2][4] |
| View | Saw the ad, with at least 1 pixel on screen, and didn't click [1] | Nothing an upload supplies: Google describes view-through as a conversion on your site [3] |
The columns differ too. Engaged-view conversions are "included in both the 'Conversions' and the 'All conversions' columns" [2]. View-through conversions "are not included in the 'Conversions' column, only in the 'View-through conversions' and 'All conversions' columns" [3] (with Demand Gen's view-through bidding on, they move into "Conversions" [1]). So the buyer above lands in a different column depending on which rung Google can prove.
From a store running the app, Google Ads gets at most one upload per Shopify order, keyed on the order ID, with the order total, the Google click ID the app captured on the visit (gclid, gbraid or wbraid), and, if you turn on Enhanced Conversions, the buyer's hashed email, phone and address. The app loads no Google Ads tag on your storefront. Google Ads consent is read from your site's own Consent Mode state and passed with each upload. Google Ads is a Plus channel in the app.
Clicks: the rung your uploads already cover
When the viewer taps the ad, Google appends a click ID to the landing address, the app captures it, and the purchase goes up with it. That's the default behavior, and it needs no setting. A YouTube click that ends in a purchase is credited like any other click conversion on the action you picked in the app.
This is also the only rung that works with no customer data on the upload at all. The engaged-view rung depends on Google matching a person rather than a click.
How do engaged views reach Google Ads without a tag?
Through the customer data on the upload. Google calls uploads that carry hashed customer data "enhanced conversions for leads", an "upgraded version of offline conversion import that uses user-provided data", and says "This upgrade also enables engaged-view conversions and cross-device conversions" [4]. Google matches that data "to the same data collected on your website (for example, lead form) and to signed-in customers who engaged with your ad" [4]. Google's offline-import page repeats the same engaged-view line [5].
Now go back to the buyer who watched 14 seconds and never clicked. Her order has no Google click ID, and by default the app only uploads orders that carry one. Two settings in the app's Google Ads settings change that:
- Enable Enhanced Conversions. The app adds the buyer's hashed email, phone and address to the upload. Google Ads needs its side switched on as well; the Google Ads settings that matter for server-side Enhanced Conversions walks through those panels.
- "Import all events that have user-provided data, even those without GCLID". It lets an order with no click ID go up on hashed data. That setting changes more than YouTube credit, so read the trade-offs of Google Ads conversions without a GCLID before you flip it.
Both are off by default, and both sit on Plus. With them on, her order reaches Google, and Google can match it to a signed-in viewer who watched the ad. Whether it does is Google's call.
Google also puts a clock on uploads: "you must upload conversion events within 14 days of the conversion date and time", and "Even if you set your conversion window to 30 days, Google Ads will not record engaged-view conversions if you wait longer than 14 days to upload your offline conversion data" [2]. The app uploads when the order is created by default, so the default setup meets it. The edge case is a Plus store that switched "When to send the Purchase event" to "When the order is paid". The upload then goes out at payment but keeps the order's creation time, so an order paid more than 14 days after it was placed reaches Google too late for engaged-view credit.
The engaged-view window itself is a setting on the conversion action. Google's default for "Web conversions and offline conversion import" is 3 days, and you change it under Goals > Summary > your conversion action > Edit settings > Engaged-view conversion window [2]. GA4 has its own engaged-view window for its own attribution, a separate setting covered in our guide to GA4 conversion lookback windows.
Why do view-through conversions in Google Ads need a Google tag?
Because Google defines them on the site. The "View-through conversions" column "tells you when customers view, but don't interact with your ad, and later complete a conversion on your site", and "View-through conversions from browsers that don't allow cross-site cookies can't be reported" [3].
Demand Gen's view-through optimization is "currently in Open Beta and eligible to all interested advertisers", supported "for YouTube, Display, and Discover Feed", and "Newly created Demand Gen campaigns will have VTC optimization enabled by default" [1]. The same page sets the limit: "VTC optimization does not currently support offline conversions, store visits, or OCI. VTC optimization currently only supports online web conversions created through Google Ads and Floodlight conversions in Display & Video 360 that are directly tracked through Google website tags" [1].
If you've opened a new Demand Gen campaign and found "Include view-through conversions" already ticked in the campaign's conversion optimization settings, that's the default at work. On an account where the app's upload is the only purchase action, the box has no supported purchase conversion to optimize for, because the app's purchases arrive as an offline import.
Google doesn't say in one sentence that uploads never appear in the view-through column. It describes view-through as a conversion on your site, documents Demand Gen's view-through bidding for tag-tracked conversions, and says that bidding doesn't support offline imports.
Getting view-through purchases means adding a purchase action measured by a Google tag. On Shopify that's usually the Google & YouTube channel's tag. Then two actions count the same order, and only one should count toward bidding; running a tracking app alongside the Google & YouTube channel covers how to pick, and which Google Ads conversion action should count as primary covers why it changes bidding. Google recommends a 1-day window for primary view-through conversions [1].
Reading the split in Google Ads
Google keeps the three rungs apart in one segment. To see them for a YouTube or Demand Gen campaign:
- In Google Ads, open Campaigns and select the campaign.
- Open Segments > Conversions > Ad event type. Google's mapping: "Impressions is VTC, engaged-view is EVC and clicks is click-through conversions (CTC)" [1]. Google's engaged-view page says engaged-view conversions "fall under the label 'Interactions'" there [2].
- Add the "View-through conversions" column next to "Conversions"; it shows every view-through, biddable or not [1][3].
- Compare the engaged-view rows from before and after you switch on the two app settings, over the same number of days.
Black Friday is November 27, and the freeze calendar puts "Checkout, theme, and app changes: complete by around November 13" (the Black Friday tracking freeze calendar, our BFCM readiness page). Switching the two app settings on before then leaves a few weeks of engaged-view rows to compare. A tag-tracked purchase action is a theme or channel change, so it belongs before that date too, along with the primary choice it forces.
Don't expect the other systems to agree. Google says "impression based metrics like Engaged-view conversions (EVC) and VTC are not exported" [1]. Shopify gets none of that credit, so a buyer who watched and never clicked shows up in Shopify's reports under whatever brought her back. Google Ads is the only place her engaged view appears. For the wider view versus click comparison across Meta, Google Ads and GA4, see why the three platforms show different purchase counts.
FAQ
Can uploaded conversions get view-through credit in Google Ads?
Google describes view-through as a conversion "on your site" [3] and documents Demand Gen's view-through bidding only for conversions its website tags track, saying that bidding "does not currently support offline conversions, store visits, or OCI" [1]. Engaged-view credit is documented for uploads that carry hashed customer data [4].
Does WeltPixel Conversion Tracking send YouTube views to Google Ads?
No. The app uploads purchases from your Shopify orders, with a click ID or hashed customer data. Google decides which ad event type gets the credit by matching [1][4].
What counts as an engaged view on YouTube Shorts?
Google counts a Shorts viewer who watches "at least 5 seconds of your ad" or clicks the call-to-action button [2]. Skippable in-stream ads need at least 10 seconds, or the whole ad if it's shorter [2].
Do Demand Gen campaigns need the Google tag for engaged-view conversions?
Google documents no tag requirement for them. It lists Demand Gen among the campaign types that track engaged-view conversions [2] and says uploads with hashed customer data enable them [4]; the tag requirement it documents is for view-through optimization [1].
Give your YouTube buyers' orders the data Google matches on
WeltPixel Conversion Tracking uploads Shopify orders to Google Ads on Plus ($39/month, no order limit) [6], with the click ID it captured and, once you turn on Enhanced Conversions, the hashed customer data engaged-view matching needs. Switch on the two settings above, then read the engaged-view rows in the Ad event type segment.
